Also known as Chainlink Labs, Chainlink Foundation, LINK, CCIP, Chainlink CCIP, Data Streams, CRE, SmartContract

what is chainlink

Chainlink is a network of independent node operators that deliver outside data, mainly asset prices, to blockchains, and that also carry tokens and messages between chains through its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). It is built by Chainlink Labs, founded in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis. LINK is the token used to pay operators and to stake as a security deposit.

Our read

Chainlink suits protocols and institutions that want the most widely integrated price feeds and a cross-chain standard that banks and large DeFi protocols have already vetted. The thing to watch is how much of that security is operational rather than structural: CCIP's separate Risk Management Network no longer runs its automated checks, and pausing a lane is now a manual decision by the CCIP owner. That is a real change from how CCIP was sold, and integrators should read the current docs rather than the 2023 pitch.

Blockchains cannot see anything outside themselves. A lending market that liquidates at a price, or a perps exchange that marks positions, has to be told that price by someone. Chainlink's core business is being that someone: decentralized oracle networks in which a set of independent node operators each fetch data, the answers are aggregated, and the result is written on-chain or signed for the application to verify.

A push-style Data Feed does not update continuously. It writes a new price when the market moves more than a set deviation from the last on-chain value, or when a heartbeat timer runs out, whichever comes first. Many feeds also carried hard minimum and maximum bounds, and that detail has cost money before: in May 2022 the LUNA feed stopped at its floor of $0.107 while LUNA traded around a cent, and a lender that kept reading it was drained. Integrators are expected to check timestamps and bounds themselves; the feed will not do it for them.

That market dominance is the reason Chainlink is on this directory as a bridge. Once the same operators were already signing prices on dozens of chains, the company used them to carry tokens and messages between chains too. CCIP is the product our bridge coverage is about, but it is a minority of what the network does.

Chainlink reports $110 billion of "total value secured" at the end of Q2 2026 and $34.18 trillion of cumulative transaction value enabled. Those are the company's own metrics, not audited figures, but no rival oracle comes near either.

The institutional list is what separates Chainlink from crypto-native competitors: Swift, DTCC, Euroclear, J.P. Morgan's Kinexys, UBS and ANZ have all run pilots or production work on its stack. In Q2 2026 DTCC said it was integrating CRE into its Collateral AppChain, and more than 50 banks joined Project Pangea for same-day FX settlement.

CCIP moves a token or a message from chain A to chain B in two phases. A committing oracle network watches the source chain and posts a Merkle root of outgoing messages to the destination; an executing network then proves individual messages against that root and delivers them. Tokens use the Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard: the issuer keeps control of its token contract and picks burn-and-mint or lock-and-release, with rate limits per lane.

Fees are flat for most routes and percentage-based only for lock-and-release pools. Paying in LINK is 10% cheaper (CCIP billing docs).

Adoption accelerated in 2026. Chainlink says over $7 billion of token value moved onto CCIP in Q2 alone, including Mantle's MNT, Kraken's kBTC and KelpDAO's rsETH, which switched after its previous bridge provider was exploited in April 2026. Robinhood Chain adopted Chainlink for data and cross-chain from its mainnet launch.

How that compares with the other big messaging networks comes down to who signs. Wormhole relies on one fixed set of 19 Guardian companies, 13 of which must agree. CCIP relies on Chainlink's oracle networks, whose operators are also selected and configured by Chainlink Labs, plus issuer-set rate limits that cap how much can leave a lane in a given window. Neither is trustless; both ask you to trust a named group of operators. What CCIP adds is that the token issuer, not the bridge, owns the token contract and its limits.

For a user sending tokens, the practical questions are simpler: is the token a CCT (native on both chains) or a wrapped copy, what is the lane's rate limit, and which fee token are you paying in. A burn-and-mint transfer of a CCT from Ethereum to an L2 costs $0.50, or $0.45 in LINK, whatever the amount, which makes CCIP cheap for large transfers and relatively expensive for small ones.

The Risk Management Network, a second, independently coded set of nodes that could veto suspicious transfers, was CCIP's headline safety feature. Chainlink's current documentation says its automated off-chain role is no longer active and may return as an optional layer; the on-chain contract remains so the CCIP owner can manually "curse" (pause) a chain or the whole network.

04

Chainlink was started in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis; Cornell professor Ari Juels co-wrote the original whitepaper and is counted among the founders. The GitHub organization, created in November 2017, is still called smartcontractkit.

Three bodies matter today. Chainlink Labs employs most of the engineers and runs business development with banks and market infrastructure. The Chainlink Foundation holds the website copyright and stewards the network. The node operators, many of them staking and infrastructure companies, run the oracle networks under agreements rather than open permissionless entry. There is no on-chain governance vote over price feeds; Chainlink Labs and the operators configure them.

Nazarov remains the public face. In 2026 the company hired Andrew McCormick as head of institutional and market development, a sign of where it expects revenue to come from.

Staking v0.2 opened in stages from 28 November to 11 December 2023. The pool is capped at 45M LINK: 40.875M for community stakers (1 to 15,000 LINK per address) and the rest for node operators (1,000 to 75,000 LINK). The base reward is 4.5% a year; community stakers net about 4.32% after 4% is delegated to operators (Chainlink staking).

Staked LINK backs specific services, starting with the ETH/USD feed on Ethereum. Community stakers can raise an alert if the feed stops updating and earn a reward if the alert is valid; node operators whose feed fails can be slashed.

The cap matters: 45M LINK is 4.5% of the 1 billion maximum supply, so staking covers a small fraction of tokens, so for most holders LINK is not a yield instrument. Price and supply are on our LINK market page.

  • Q2 2026: Ten prediction-market apps adopt Chainlink for resolution, including the FIFA World Cup partner ADI Predictstreet.
  • Q2 2026: Robinhood Chain and Stripe-backed Tempo adopt CCIP.
  • 2026: CCIP docs record the Risk Management Network's automated role as inactive.

The dispute to know about: after the 10 October 2025 crash, Venus Protocol's risk manager attributed part of about $1.38M of bad debt to a deviation on Chainlink's CAKE feed, and Chainlink publicly disputed that reading (Venus forum). Oracle errors rarely stay on the oracle's books; they land on the protocols that read them.

LUNA price feed suspended at its floor during the Terra collapse

Chainlink's LUNA/USD feed hit its configured minimum price of $0.107 and stopped updating while the market price kept falling to around $0.01. Venus Protocol kept accepting LUNA at the stale price and exploiters borrowed against it, leaving Venus with a shortfall of about $14.2M. The loss sat with Venus, not Chainlink.

Repaid — company's word onlyChainlink paid nothing; the feed behaved as configured. Venus said its $15M Risk Fund would cover the full shortfall over time. We did not find an independent confirmation of the final repayment.

Frequently asked questions

Chainlink vs Quant: what is the difference?+

Chainlink runs decentralized oracle networks and CCIP, open to any chain and paid in LINK. Quant sells Overledger, enterprise software for connecting ledgers under licence. They court the same banks but Chainlink's network is far more widely used in DeFi.

Is Chainlink a bridge?+

Partly. Its main business is price and data oracles; CCIP, its cross-chain protocol, is the part that works as a bridge for tokens and messages.

Has Chainlink ever been hacked?+

We found no exploit of Chainlink's oracle or CCIP contracts on record. Its best-known failure was the LUNA feed stopping at a floor price in May 2022, which protocols reading it paid for.

What does Chainlink Proof of Reserve do?+

It publishes on-chain the reserves backing a wrapped or tokenized asset, so a contract can stop minting if reserves fall short. The attestation is only as good as the reserve data source it reads.

Who is Sergey Nazarov?+

The co-founder of Chainlink, with Steve Ellis, in 2017. He leads Chainlink Labs' public and institutional work.
