About XRP

XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger, a fast, low-cost blockchain designed for payments and value transfer. Launched in 2012, XRP is built to settle transactions in seconds with very low fees, and it is often used to move value across borders and between different currencies. The company Ripple is its best-known backer and uses it in payment products.

How XRP works

The XRP Ledger does not use mining or traditional proof of stake. Instead it relies on a consensus protocol in which a network of independent validators agrees on the order and validity of transactions roughly every few seconds. This design lets the ledger confirm payments quickly and cheaply without the energy cost of proof-of-work mining.

XRP can act as a bridge asset: rather than holding many currency pairs, an institution can convert one currency into XRP, send it across the ledger, and convert it into another currency on the other side. The ledger also supports features such as a built-in decentralized exchange and token issuance.

What XRP is used for

  • Cross-border payments: XRP can bridge currencies for fast international settlement.
  • Liquidity: it provides on-demand liquidity so businesses avoid pre-funding accounts in many currencies.
  • Low-cost transfers: fees on the XRP Ledger are very small.
  • Tokenization and trading: the ledger supports issued tokens and a native exchange.
XRP's pitch is institutional plumbing: settle value across currencies in seconds without pre-funded accounts everywhere. — CoinRadar Daily analysis

Tokenomics & supply

XRP has a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, all created at the ledger's launch rather than mined over time. A large portion was allocated to Ripple, much of which the company placed into escrow contracts that release tokens on a schedule to add predictability to supply. A small amount of XRP is destroyed as a transaction fee with every payment, which slowly and gradually reduces the total over time.

Because no new XRP is created through mining or staking, the supply story centers on the pace of escrow releases and the slow burn of fees rather than ongoing issuance.

Risks and considerations

XRP has faced significant regulatory uncertainty, including high-profile litigation in the United States over whether certain sales constituted securities offerings. Regulatory outcomes can materially affect how XRP is traded and used in different jurisdictions.

The concentration of XRP held by Ripple and in escrow draws criticism about decentralization and potential supply pressure. As with any crypto asset, XRP is volatile, adoption by financial institutions is not guaranteed, and users should understand custody and legal considerations before participating.

Frequently asked questions

Is XRP the same as Ripple?+

No. XRP is the cryptocurrency and the XRP Ledger is the blockchain, while Ripple is a company that builds payment products using XRP. The ledger itself is independent of any single company.

How many XRP exist?+

XRP has a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, all created at launch. A small amount is burned with each transaction, so the total slowly decreases over time.

Why is XRP used for payments?+

XRP settles in seconds with very low fees and can act as a bridge between currencies, which makes it useful for fast cross-border transfers and on-demand liquidity.

What is the XRP escrow?+

Ripple placed a large portion of XRP into time-locked escrow contracts that release tokens on a schedule, intended to make the available supply more predictable over time.
