About Sui
Sui (SUI) is a layer 1 blockchain designed for high throughput and low-latency transactions. It uses an object-centric data model and the Move programming language, with the goal of supporting consumer-scale applications, payments, and on-chain games. SUI is the network's native token, used to pay fees and secure the chain.
How Sui works
Sui models on-chain state as objects rather than a single shared account ledger, which allows many independent transactions to be processed in parallel instead of strictly one after another. Simple transfers that do not touch shared state can follow a faster path, while transactions involving shared objects go through full consensus. This design aims to increase scalability as hardware and demand grow.
The network is secured by a proof-of-stake system in which validators stake SUI and token holders can delegate their stake to help secure the chain and earn rewards. Smart contracts are written in Move, a language designed with safety features intended to reduce common classes of bugs around digital assets.
What SUI is used for
- Transaction fees: SUI pays for computation and storage on the network.
- Staking and security: validators and delegators stake SUI to secure the chain.
- Applications: powering DeFi, gaming, NFTs, and other on-chain apps.
- Governance participation: a role in network decisions over time.
Risks and considerations
As a newer layer 1, Sui competes with many established and emerging smart-contract platforms, and adoption is not guaranteed. SUI is volatile, token unlock schedules can affect supply dynamics, and any blockchain carries smart-contract and validator-centralization risks. Prospective participants should review the official documentation and understand the trade-offs before investing or building.
Frequently asked questions
What is Sui?+
Sui is a layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain built for fast, parallel transaction processing using an object-based data model and the Move programming language.
What is the SUI token used for?+
SUI pays transaction fees, is staked by validators and delegators to secure the network, and can play a role in governance.
Why does Sui process transactions in parallel?+
Sui treats state as independent objects, so transactions that do not touch the same shared data can be executed at the same time, aiming for higher throughput.
