Bitcoin Slides Below $77K as Hot Inflation Data Hits Markets Ahead of Senate's Crypto Vote

Bitcoin dropped under $77,000 on September 11 as a hotter-than-expected PPI reading and rising Treasury yields triggered nearly $500 million in liquidations, even as the U.S. Senate locked in a September 15 vote that could reshape crypto regulation.

Bitcoin Retreats Below $77K as Inflation Fears Return

Bitcoin fell below the $77,000 mark on Friday, trading around $76,700 in early Asian hours after failing to reclaim the $79,000–$80,000 resistance zone earlier in the week. The move wiped out much of the bounce crypto markets had enjoyed since their August lows, and it dragged crypto-linked equities down with it — Coinbase shares dropped roughly 5%, Strategy fell more than 7%, and smaller-cap miners like Galaxy and CIFR posted double-digit losses.

The trigger was a hotter-than-expected Producer Price Index (PPI) print, which, combined with oil prices pushing above $100 and U.S. Treasury yields approaching 5%, revived market expectations of further rate hikes. That macro shock rippled straight into crypto derivatives markets: roughly $500 million in leveraged positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with long positions absorbing the bulk of the damage. Ninety-five of the 100 tokens in the CoinDesk 100 index closed lower, and meme coins and smaller-cap assets led the decline — a pattern analysts read as a clearing of overleveraged momentum trades rather than a broad capitulation by long-term holders.

ETF Flows Point to a More Nuanced Picture

Despite the sell-off, institutional flows told a more mixed story. Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. saw about $120 million in net outflows for the period, but Ethereum ETFs pulled in roughly $34.75 million and Solana ETFs added another $11.73 million in net inflows. That divergence suggests capital isn't fleeing crypto outright so much as rotating — away from smaller, higher-beta tokens and toward a narrower set of larger, more liquid assets. Market data also shows Bitcoin's dominance climbing, with BTC now accounting for roughly two-thirds of total crypto market capitalization outside stablecoins.

With a fresh U.S. CPI report due out the same day, traders are treating it as the last major directional catalyst before next week's Federal Reserve meeting. A soft print could open the door for BTC to retest $78,000–$80,000; a hotter one risks pushing the price back toward the $76,000 support zone, with $72,000 as the next line of defense if that breaks.

Washington's Next Move: The CLARITY Act Heads to the Senate Floor

While traders were digesting the inflation data, U.S. lawmakers took a significant step toward resolving one of the industry's biggest overhangs: regulatory uncertainty. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed a motion to proceed on the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act (H.R. 3633), setting up an initial procedural vote for 2:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 15 — the day the Senate returns from recess.

The bill would establish a formal federal framework for digital asset markets in the United States, drawing clearer jurisdictional lines between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, with most day-to-day oversight shifting to the CFTC. Supporters argue that passage would give traditional financial institutions the legal certainty they've been waiting for to expand their involvement in crypto markets.

The vote itself is only procedural — a decision on whether to formally take up the bill, not on final passage — but it's a meaningful test. Republicans need roughly six to seven Democratic votes to clear the Senate's 60-vote threshold, a gap that negotiators have reportedly been trying to close with a bipartisan ethics addendum addressing conflict-of-interest concerns tied to crypto-related business dealings by government officials.

What It Means for U.S. Investors

Taken together, Friday's price action and the looming Senate vote capture where the U.S. crypto market currently stands: short-term price direction is being driven by the same macro forces — inflation prints, bond yields, Fed expectations — that move every other risk asset, while the medium-term outlook depends heavily on whether Washington can finally deliver a clear regulatory rulebook. A successful cloture vote on September 15 wouldn't change market structure overnight, but it would signal that the CLARITY Act has real momentum heading into the fall — something institutional allocators have said they're watching closely before committing further capital to the space.

For now, traders are left balancing two very different clocks: the hour-by-hour swings driven by this week's inflation data, and the slower-moving calendar in Washington that could define crypto's regulatory future for years to come.
