Keystone 3 Pro

Strongranked 3 of 5 in hardware wallets◆ Sources checked · 27 Sept 2026

Air-gapped operation via QR codes, three secure chips, and support well beyond Bitcoin, on a display large enough to read what you sign. The firmware is published and can be checked by checksum, but it is not fully open: some third-party microcontroller libraries are vendor-restricted and the secure-element firmware is closed. The maker is a Hong Kong company manufacturing in China, with a shorter record than the European incumbents.

Best for: Air-gapped QR signing with multi-chain support

How this score was reached

8.0 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Does the job well with no material unresolved concerns.

Custody & Security45%
8.3

Air-gapped QR signing with no USB data link, Bluetooth or NFC needed, and three secure chips from two vendors. Keystone 3 firmware is on GitHub with a build-and-checksum guide, but some third-party MCU libraries are vendor-restricted and the secure-element firmware is closed, so it is not fully open source. A firmware vulnerability found with Offside Labs was patched in 1.2.8 (January 2024); no losses reported.

Cost & Fee Transparency15%
7.6

$149 (Sept 2026), no ongoing cost.

Regulation & Legal Standing5%
6.8

Yanssie HK Limited, incorporated in Hong Kong in February 2021 (the project began in 2018 as Cobo Vault); devices are made in China. A thinner public disclosure history than the European competition.

Performance & Reliability15%
8.2

Good multi-chain coverage through companion wallets, reliable firmware, and a 4-inch display that makes verifying a transaction practical.

Access & Support20%
8.0

Straightforward setup; the QR workflow takes some getting used to but is well documented.

Strengths

  • Air-gapped QR signing with no data cable at all, across many chains
  • Three secure chips; firmware published with a checksum guide
  • Large display makes transaction verification actually practical

Against it

  • Not fully open source: vendor-restricted MCU libraries and closed secure-element firmware
  • Hong Kong maker, made in China, with a shorter disclosure record
  • QR workflow is slower than plugging in a cable

Air-gapped signing in a device people can use

Keystone signs over QR codes with no USB data link, Bluetooth or NFC needed, runs three secure chips, and has a 4-inch display that makes verifying what you sign practical rather than theoretical. It covers many chains through companion wallets such as MetaMask, Rabby and Sparrow.

Two things hold it back. It is not fully open source: the Keystone 3 firmware is on GitHub with a guide to check the checksum against your device, but some third-party microcontroller libraries are under vendor licence and the secure-element firmware is closed. And it has less history: the operator, Yanssie HK Limited, was incorporated in Hong Kong in 2021, devices are made in China, and the public disclosure record is thinner than the European makers’. That is a statement about the length of the record, not about anything found in it — the one firmware vulnerability disclosed, patched in January 2024, caused no reported losses.

Frequently asked questions

How does QR signing work?+

The wallet software displays a QR code containing the unsigned transaction, the device reads it with its camera, you approve on the device, and it displays a QR code containing the signature. No cable, no Bluetooth, no data path between the device and your computer at any point.

Is Keystone open source?+

Mostly. The Keystone 3 firmware, hardware schematics and bill of materials are published, and you can build the firmware and compare checksums. Some third-party microcontroller libraries are vendor-restricted and the secure-element firmware is not public, so it is not fully open source in the way Trezor’s and BitBox’s main firmware is.

Is Keystone as secure as Coldcard?+

Both are air-gapped with multiple secure chips. Coldcard’s Bitcoin-only scope removes contract-signing risk, but its seed generation was broken from March 2021 until July 2026 and about 1,789 BTC was stolen. Keystone has no fund loss on record, covers many chains and is far easier to use.
