phantom wallet
Phantom is a self-custodial crypto wallet from Phantom Technologies in San Francisco, launched on Solana in 2021 and now also covering Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin, HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain and Arc. It runs as a browser extension and a mobile app; the company never holds your keys, and it charges 0.85% on in-app swaps.
Our read
Phantom is the wallet to give someone who has never held crypto, especially if their tokens live on Solana. It is also a venture-funded company chasing trading volume: perps, tokenised stocks and memecoin swaps sit one tap from the balance screen, and chains get added and dropped (Sui and Monad were cut in 2026) as the business case shifts. Watch the chain list and the swap fee, and keep large holdings behind a hardware wallet connected to it.

What Phantom wallet is and which chains it supports
Phantom Technologies was founded in 2021 in San Francisco by Brandon Millman (CEO), Chris Kalani and Francesco Agosti, and shipped its first product as a Solana browser extension. The iOS app followed in January 2022. In January 2025 it raised $150 million at a $3 billion valuation in a round led by Sequoia and Paradigm, with a16z crypto and Variant joining, and said it had 15 million monthly users holding $25 billion (The Block).
It is self-custodial: the recovery phrase and keys are created on your device, and Phantom can show you balances and prices but cannot sign for you. That split became visible on 6 April 2026, when Phantom's price and balance service went down for about two hours and users saw zeros. Solana kept running and the funds never moved; only Phantom's own servers failed (The Block).
| Network | Status in Phantom (September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Solana | Supported since launch |
| Ethereum, Base, Polygon | Supported |
| Bitcoin (Native SegWit, Taproot) | Supported |
| HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain, Arc | Supported |
| Monad | Dropped 26 August 2026 |
| Sui | Added January 2025, dropped 24 September 2026 |
| Arbitrum, Optimism, BSC, Avalanche, Unichain, Linea | Not supported |
The missing EVM chains trip people up. Tokens sent to your Phantom address on Arbitrum or BSC are not lost, since the same address exists there, but Phantom will not show them. Phantom's help center says to import the recovery phrase into an EVM wallet that supports that chain to reach them (Phantom). The same applies to Sui holders after 24 September 2026: the coins stay on Sui and open in a Sui wallet such as Slush (Phantom).
Is Phantom wallet safe and legit?
Phantom is a real, venture-backed US company, and there is no record of its key storage being broken in a way that drained users at scale. It defaults to transaction previews, flags known malicious sites and hides spam tokens. Its app code is not fully open source, so outsiders cannot audit what the shipped extension does to the extent they can with Rabby or BlueWallet. What is on record:
| Date | What happened | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| June 2022 | "Demonic" bug: browsers could cache the recovery phrase typed at import onto disk (also hit MetaMask, Brave) | Patched after Halborn's disclosure |
| January 2025 | A researcher claimed a vulnerability; Phantom said it did not put funds at risk | Disputed, no losses shown |
| April 2025 | Murphy v. Phantom Technologies filed in New York: plaintiffs say malware pulled a decrypted key from browser memory and took over $500K | Phantom denies the claims; case pending as far as public records show |
| April 2026 | Price and balance service outage, about two hours | No funds affected |
The lawsuit is worth reading for what it claims rather than what it proves. The attacker had already compromised the lawyer's computer (complaint, Case 1:25-cv-03060). Any hot wallet on an infected machine has to hold its key in memory while it signs; that is the argument for a hardware signer, and Phantom supports Ledger for exactly that reason.
Most real losses from Phantom accounts come from address poisoning and fake support. Scammers send dust from a look-alike address so it shows up in your history, then wait for you to copy it. Phantom support does not start conversations in Discord or X DMs and never needs your phrase.
Getting the real Phantom wallet extension
The genuine Chrome listing is named just "Phantom", is published by the owner of phantom.com, and showed about 5 million users and version 26.30.2 on 17 September 2026 (Chrome Web Store). The iOS app is "Phantom: Trading Wallet" from Phantom Technologies Incorporated. Fake copies usually give themselves away with a few thousand users, a publisher that is not phantom.com, or a name padded with words like "Solana Wallet Official".
- 01Open phantom.com by typing it and use its download button to reach the store.
- 02Check the publisher line and user count on the store page.
- 03When restoring, type the recovery phrase only into the extension's own onboarding tab, never into a website.
- 04If you already use a Ledger, connect it in Phantom so large balances need a physical button press to move.
The extension and the mobile app restore from the same recovery phrase, so the accounts you create in one open in the other. If you only use the phone app, you do not need the extension at all, and every extension you skip is one less thing that can be swapped out by a malicious update.
Phantom wallet features and fees
Phantom has grown from a Solana key manager into a trading app. Swaps, cross-chain swaps, native SOL staking, NFTs, and since 2025 perpetual futures routed through Hyperliquid and tokenised equities through Robinhood Chain all sit inside the wallet (CryptoSlate).
| Action | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Receive, hold, send | Network fee only |
| Swap inside Phantom | 0.85% Phantom fee on swaps that carry one, plus network fee |
| Cross-chain swap | Source network fee, cross-chain swap fee, sometimes a destination fee |
| Native SUI to wrapped SUI (until 24 September 2026) | Phantom fee waived; network and exchange fees apply |
The 0.85% is shown in the quote before you confirm (Phantom Help Center). On a $2,000 memecoin buy that is $17, which is more than the Solana transaction itself by a factor of thousands. Users who trade often do it on a DEX front end and let Phantom only sign.
There is no Phantom token. The company said in January 2025 that its social features were not an airdrop farm and it had no token plans, and nothing has been launched since (CoinMarketCap). Any "PHANTOM airdrop" claim page is a drainer.

Murphy v. Phantom Technologies: lawsuit over key extracted from browser memory
A crypto lawyer and 13 co-plaintiffs sued Phantom in the Southern District of New York (1:25-cv-03060), alleging that malware on his computer exported his decrypted private key from browser memory on 20 January 2025 and drained over $500,000, and seeking at least $3.1 million. Phantom denies the claims. The amount is the plaintiffs' allegation, not a finding.

"Demonic" flaw let browsers cache recovery phrases on disk (CVE-2022-32969)
Halborn found that phrases typed into the import field of several extension wallets, Phantom among them, could be saved to disk by the browser in plain text. Phantom patched after disclosure.
No funds at stakeResponsibly disclosed vulnerability; no losses attributed to it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Phantom only for Solana?+
No. It started on Solana and now also supports Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin, HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain and Arc. It does not show Arbitrum, Optimism, BSC or Avalanche, and it dropped Monad and Sui in 2026.
How do I withdraw money from Phantom wallet to my bank?+
Phantom holds crypto, not dollars. You either sell through a third-party provider offered in the app where your region allows it, or send the tokens to an exchange account and withdraw to the bank from there.
Can I stake SOL in Phantom?+
Yes. Phantom lets you delegate SOL natively to a validator from inside the wallet; the SOL stays in your control, and unstaking follows Solana's epoch timing of roughly two to three days.
How do I spot a fake Phantom wallet?+
The real extension is published by the owner of phantom.com and has millions of users; the real iOS app comes from Phantom Technologies Incorporated. Anything that asks for your recovery phrase on a web page, or offers a Phantom token, is fake.
Does Phantom have a token?+
No. Phantom said in January 2025 that it has no plans for a token, and none has launched.
