BlueWallet is a free, open-source (MIT) Bitcoin-only wallet for iPhone, Android and macOS, first released in 2018. It keeps keys on your device and adds multisig vaults, watch-only wallets and hardware-wallet signing. Since v7.2.2 in November 2025 its Lightning wallet runs on Ark via Arkade instead of the custodial LndHub service it shut in 2023.
Our read
BlueWallet suits someone who holds only bitcoin and wants a phone app that grows with them, from a single wallet to a 2-of-3 vault signed on hardware devices. Being Bitcoin-only removes the token-approval tricks behind most wallet drains. The part to understand before using it is Lightning: the old custodial option is gone, and the new Ark-based wallet depends on an outside operator in ways on-chain bitcoin does not.

What BlueWallet is
BlueWallet is a Bitcoin-only wallet built in React Native, with its code on GitHub since January 2018 under the MIT licence (GitHub). The iOS app went live on 27 May 2018; the publisher is Bluewallet Services, S. R. L. There is no token, no account and no sign-up. A small group of maintainers ships it; the release notes credit most recent work to the developer known as Overtorment.

Version 8.0.1 (21 July 2026) added importing an Unchained multisig setup as a cosigner, air-gapped QR scanning for OneKey and Keystone, and switched internal cryptography from crypto-js to the audited @noble libraries (release notes).
Is BlueWallet non-custodial? The Lightning question
For on-chain bitcoin, yes: the keys are generated and kept on your phone, and BlueWallet's servers never see them. Lightning is where the answer has changed twice.

BlueWallet announced on 23 February 2023 that it would close its custodial Lightning service, saying LndHub had begun as "a weekend experiment" and that the wallet would support only self-custody from then on (Bitcoin Magazine). The shutdown date moved from 30 April to 31 May 2023. Users still had to withdraw by hand.
Ark keeps your bitcoin in off-chain outputs you can unilaterally exit to the main chain, but day-to-day payments depend on the Ark server being online and honest about timing. Treat the Lightning wallet as spending money and keep savings in an on-chain or multisig wallet.
Is BlueWallet safe?
We found no hack, key-generation flaw or user-fund loss attributed to BlueWallet's code in eight years of releases. Because it signs only bitcoin transactions, the token-approval drains that empty EVM wallets do not apply. The realistic risks are the phone itself and the backup: a screenshot of the recovery phrase in a cloud photo library is the common way BlueWallet users lose coins.
For amounts that matter, BlueWallet works best as a coordinator rather than a key-holder: keep keys on a hardware device, load the wallet as watch-only, and sign by QR or PSBT file. Its multisig vault does the same with two or three devices. If you move to a new iPhone, restore from the written recovery phrase or the vault's exported configuration. Do not count on the app's data coming across.

Yes. BlueWallet charges nothing; you pay only Bitcoin network fees, which you can set yourself and raise later with RBF or CPFP.
Does BlueWallet support Lightning?+
Yes, through a Lightning wallet built on Ark (Arkade) since v7.2.2 in November 2025, or by connecting to your own LndHub server. BlueWallet's own custodial Lightning node shut in May 2023.
