Bitcoin-only, MIT-licensed, and works as a coordinator for hardware wallets and multisig vaults. Lightning has changed twice: BlueWallet ran it custodially until it closed LndHub on 31 May 2023, and since v7.2.2 (24 November 2025) its Lightning wallet runs on Ark via Arkade, self-custodial but dependent on the Ark operator for day-to-day payments.
Best for: Bitcoin on mobile, from a single wallet to a hardware-signed vault
8.1 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Does the job well with no material unresolved concerns.
On-chain keys are generated and kept on the device; MIT-licensed, with hardware-wallet signing, watch-only and multisig vaults, and no hack or fund loss attributed to its code since 2018. Bitcoin-only scope removes approval-based attacks. Lightning was custodial (BlueWallet’s LndHub) until 31 May 2023; the current Ark-based Lightning wallet keeps a unilateral exit but relies on the Ark server being online and honest about timing.
Free, with only network fees passed through at cost.
Unlicensed software published by Bluewallet Services, S. R. L., with clear terms.
Reliable on-chain operation with coin control, RBF and CPFP. Lightning moved to Ark (Arkade, with Boltz swaps) only in November 2025 and has a short record.
Clean mobile experience on iPhone and Android, plus a macOS app. The Lightning wallet asks more of the user than on-chain does.
Strengths
Against it
BlueWallet is Bitcoin-only and MIT-licensed. The narrowness is the security argument: no token approvals means no approval drains, which is the mechanism behind most software-wallet losses. It charges nothing beyond network fees, and supports hardware wallets, watch-only mode and multisig vaults, so it works as a front end for signing devices rather than a replacement for one.
Lightning is the part to understand. Until 31 May 2023 BlueWallet’s Lightning accounts sat on its own LndHub node, which was custodial. Since the release of 24 November 2025 its Lightning wallet runs on Ark via Arkade: you keep a unilateral exit to the main chain, but day-to-day payments depend on the Ark server being online and honest about timing. Treat it as spending money and keep savings on-chain.
Not for on-chain bitcoin: keys are generated and kept on your device. Lightning was custodial until BlueWallet shut its LndHub service on 31 May 2023. The current Lightning wallet, added in November 2025, is built on Ark; you hold the funds, with an exit that depends on the Ark operator’s rules.
It is approachable, but the Ark-based wallet is less than a year old and relies on an outside operator for payments, and Lightning still asks more of the user than on-chain Bitcoin. Keep only spending amounts there.
Yes. It signs with Coldcard, Passport, Jade, Keystone and other PSBT devices, supports watch-only accounts and multisig vaults, and added animated air-gapped QR (BC-UR v2) in the release of 21 July 2026. If you used a Coldcard with it, check whether that seed falls within the 2026 Coldcard entropy bug.
