Best Hardware Wallets

The default EVM wallet and the one every application supports, which is a genuine safety property: fewer users being told to install something unfamiliar. It now also holds Solana (May 2025) and Bitcoin (December 2025). Its 0.875% swap and bridge fee is the weak point, its default warnings lag the newer competition, and its code is source-available under a custom Consensys licence rather than open source.
Best for: Universal compatibility — everything supports it
7.6 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Dependable, with trade-offs a reader should know about first.
Non-custodial, long record with no key storage broken at scale. The code is public but, since August 2020, under a custom Consensys licence (commercial forks above 10,000 monthly users need permission), so it is source-available rather than open source; anyone can still read and audit it. Default transaction warnings are weaker than Rabby’s simulation-first approach.
Free to use, but in-wallet swaps and bridges carry a 0.875% MetaMask fee plus gas, and the same 0.875% applies when a staked position is withdrawn through Swaps. Disclosed in the help centre; not the cheapest route available.
Unlicensed software from Consensys Software Inc., which on 9 September 2026 announced a split that will rename it MetaMask by the end of 2026. The SEC’s 2024 unregistered-broker case over swaps and staking was dismissed on 27 February 2025 with no fines or conditions.
Universal compatibility across EVM chains, plus native Solana accounts since extension v12.18 (May 2025) and Bitcoin since December 2025. Occasional performance issues with large account histories.
Familiar to everyone and documented everywhere, which counts for a lot. The interface shows its age.
Strengths
Against it
Every Ethereum application supports MetaMask, and that is worth more than it sounds. A user who is never told to install something unfamiliar is a user who cannot be phished by a fake wallet download — a real class of attack that compatibility quietly removes. It is no longer EVM-only either: native Solana arrived in May 2025 and Bitcoin in December 2025.
The weaknesses are specific. In-wallet swaps and bridges cost 0.875%, so route large trades elsewhere. The default transaction warnings lag Rabby’s simulation-first approach. And the code, while public, has been under a custom Consensys licence since August 2020 — source-available, not open source. Anyone can audit it; nobody can freely ship a commercial fork.
Not in the usual sense. The code is public on GitHub and can be audited, but since August 2020 it has been under a custom Consensys licence: free for personal and non-commercial use, with commercial forks above 10,000 monthly users needing permission. Rabby and BlueWallet, by contrast, are MIT-licensed.
MetaMask charges 0.875% on swaps and bridges done inside the wallet, plus gas; on a $10,000 swap that is $87.50 before gas and route spread. The fee is disclosed, but for anything material an aggregator or DEX front end will price you better. It is why MetaMask has the lowest cost score in this table.
No incident on record shows its key storage being broken at scale. Two episodes show the product contributing: in April 2022 an iPhone user lost about $655,000 after iCloud backed up the encrypted vault by default, and in June 2022 Halborn found browsers could save a recovery phrase typed at import to disk (fixed in June 2022). Most losses come from phishing and malicious approvals.
