Bitcoin Slips Below $83,000 as Hot US CPI Overshadows Fed’s Williams Signal

Bitcoin gave back early gains and fell under $83,000 after September US inflation hit 3.7%, reviving bets on another Fed rate hike despite a calmer outlook from New York Fed chief John Williams.

Bitcoin Slips Below $83,000 as Hot US CPI Overshadows Fed’s Williams Signal

Fed's Williams Sees Hikes Ending After One More Move

Early on October 14, Bitcoin climbed about 1.5% to nearly $83,900 after New York Fed President John Williams said he saw no need for further rate increases in 2027. Williams, who holds a permanent vote on the Federal Open Market Committee, did not rule out tightening this year, noting that one more hike may still be appropriate. His comments weakened the US dollar and lifted equities across Asia, which supported risk assets, including crypto. Ahead of the inflation report, CME FedWatch data put the odds of an October hike near 24%, while a December move was priced at close to 90%.

September CPI Comes in Hotter Than Forecast

The relief did not last. At 8:30 a.m. ET, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that consumer prices rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% from a year earlier. That was above the 3.6% economists expected and up from 3.4% in August. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% and accounted for roughly half of the monthly gain, while core CPI rose 0.3% on the month, ahead of forecasts. The data suggests that price pressures are broadening beyond energy.

Bitcoin Reacts as Treasury Yields Climb

Bitcoin dropped roughly $1,000 after the release and slipped below $83,000, trading near $82,650 as Treasury yields moved higher. Futures markets sharply raised the probability of a quarter-point hike at the Fed's October 27–28 meeting, with estimates from different trackers landing roughly between 45% and 50%. The central bank raised rates in September to a target range of 3.75%–4%, its first increase in more than three years.

What Traders Are Watching Next

The gap between Williams' relatively dovish outlook and market pricing remains wide. Futures traders still see rates ending 2027 at least 50 basis points higher, while Williams expects the tightening cycle to wrap up sooner. Thursday's Producer Price Index report is the next test for markets. Analysts view $85,000 as key resistance for Bitcoin, and another hot reading could keep rallies capped until the Fed's decision later this month.
