The reference sheet most of DeFi agrees on, because anyone can open the adapter code behind a number and argue with it. Core TVL data is free and needs no account; since 2025 it also sells a Pro plan at $49 a month and an API plan at $300 a month, so the free site now sits next to a product it wants you to buy.
Best for: Neutral, open protocol data you can check line by line
8.5 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Does the job well with no material unresolved concerns.
No custody, no accounts required, no API keys taken. Open source with a public methodology.
Core TVL data is free with no account. Pro costs $49 a month or $490 a year (LlamaAI, CSV export) and the API plan $300 a month for 1M calls; both are clearly priced, and there is now a paid product next to the free data.
No corporate licensing, and none needed. Methodology and corrections are public.
Broad, accurate coverage with published methodology. Occasional lag on newer protocols, disclosed rather than hidden.
Fast, open and well documented, though the interface assumes some familiarity with DeFi concepts.
Strengths
Against it
DefiLlama is the reference we check other people’s claims against, including our own, because anyone can open the adapter code behind a number and dispute it. Methodology is open, corrections happen in public, and the core TVL data is still free with no account required.
Since 2025 it also sells a Pro plan at $49 a month (LlamaAI, CSV export) and an API plan at $300 a month, so the free site now sits next to a product it wants you to buy. Both are clearly priced, which is why cost still scores well, though no longer as the tool with nothing to sell. The other limitations are disclosed: occasional lag on newly launched protocols and an interface that assumes DeFi familiarity.
It is the most checkable open source of DeFi metrics available, because the methodology and adapter code are published and corrections happen in public. A number you can check the derivation of beats a number from a vendor you cannot audit.
The core TVL data is free and needs no account. Pro costs $49 a month or $490 a year and adds LlamaAI and CSV export; the API plan costs $300 a month for 1M calls.
Because our rubric rewards verifiability and transparency, and open adapter code gives it more of both than anything else here. Nansen beats it on differentiated data; DefiLlama beats most tools on being checkable.
