Kraken Staking

Strongranked 1 of 5 in staking platforms◆ Sources checked · 27 Sept 2026

Custodial like any exchange product, but priced far more honestly than Coinbase. The 2023 SEC settlement closed the old US programme; an on-chain staking product relaunched for clients in several US states in January 2025, so availability still depends on where you live.

Best for: Exchange staking with fees that do not quietly eat the yield

How this score was reached

8.0 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Does the job well with no material unresolved concerns.

Custody & Security30%
8.2

Custodial. Kraken publishes Merkle-tree proof of reserves (30 Jun 2026: BTC 102.9%, ETH 100.5%, SOL 100.6% of client balances) and has not lost client funds to a hack of its own wallets. Proof of reserves does not cover Payward's other liabilities.

Cost & Fee Transparency25%
7.6

Commission is clearly published and materially lower than the main exchange competitor.

Regulation & Legal Standing15%
8.0

The Feb 2023 SEC settlement ($30M) closed US staking; Kraken relaunched it for clients in several US states in Jan 2025, and the SEC's wider suit was dropped in Mar 2025. No regulator currently restricts the staking product.

Performance & Reliability20%
8.0

Reliable operation with a strong uptime record.

Access & Support10%
8.4

Simple flow for existing account holders, with clear jurisdiction disclosure.

Strengths

  • Far better priced than the main exchange alternative
  • Merkle-tree proof of reserves you can check yourself
  • US staking back for clients in several states since Jan 2025

Against it

  • Custodial
  • US availability is state by state; not every jurisdiction is served
  • Fewer supported assets than dedicated validators

Exchange staking that does not eat the yield

Custodial like any exchange product, but priced far more honestly than Coinbase. Kraken publishes a Merkle-tree proof of reserves you can check your own balance against, and the 30 Jun 2026 attestation showed every listed asset above its client balances. If you are going to stake on an exchange, this is how the fees should look.

The 2023 SEC settlement closed the old US programme. Kraken relaunched an on-chain staking product for clients in several US states in January 2025, and the SEC dropped its wider suit in March 2025, so access now depends on your state rather than on an open enforcement action.

Frequently asked questions

Kraken or Coinbase for staking?+

Kraken ranks higher in this table, and the gap is almost entirely commission. Coinbase keeps 35% of rewards on most assets; Kraken’s published commission is materially lower for the same custodial convenience.

Is Kraken staking available in the US?+

In several states, since January 2025, after the 2023 SEC settlement closed the earlier programme. Check your state in the app before assuming access.

Does Kraken’s proof of reserves cover staking?+

Kraken’s Merkle-tree attestation covers client balances by asset, and you can confirm your own balance is included. It does not show Payward’s other liabilities, and a private company has no public audited balance sheet.
