Best DeFi Protocols

The reference implementation of the automated market maker and still the deepest venue on Ethereum. The v2, v3 and v4 pool contracts are immutable, open source and have held billions since 2020 without a protocol-layer exploit — a record no competitor can claim for as long. Since the UNIfication vote of 26 Dec 2025 part of each pool fee goes to a UNI burn instead of to liquidity providers; the swapper pays the same.
Best for: Deep liquidity on Ethereum with the longest audited track record
8.7 is the weighted average of the five pillar findings below. Does the job well with no material unresolved concerns.
Core pool contracts are immutable and non-custodial with no admin key able to move user funds. Multiple independent audits, open source, and v2, v3 and v4 have run at scale since 2020 without a protocol-layer exploit. The one drained pool on record is v1 imBTC/ETH in April 2020, a re-entrant ERC-777 token. v4 hooks are per-pool code that the core audits do not cover.
Pool fee tiers are explicit and set on-chain. Since the fee switch went live after UNIfication (Dec 2025) the protocol takes a share of the pool fee — 0.05% of the 0.30% on v2, 1/4 or 1/6 on v3, extended to v4 pools in Jul 2026 — out of the LP cut, not on top of the swapper price. Labs set its interface fee to zero in the same package. Gas and price impact are visible before signing.
No licensing, by design. The CFTC fined Uniswap Labs $175,000 in Sep 2024 over leveraged tokens reachable through its interface; the SEC closed its investigation without action in Feb 2025. The front end applies token screening and geographic restrictions; the protocol itself does not.
Deepest on-chain books for major Ethereum pairs in public pool data, with the lowest implied price impact at size in the category through the volatile sessions on record.
Widely integrated, well documented and available through many front ends, so a single interface going down does not remove access.
Strengths
Against it
Uniswap’s core pool contracts cannot be changed and no admin key can move user funds. That single property is why it has the highest custody score in this category. On an upgradeable protocol, whoever holds the upgrade key can alter the rules while your money is inside — a custody question wearing a technical costume. Here there is nothing to hold.
The trade is that a bug could not be patched either. The v2, v3 and v4 pools have run at multi-billion scale since 2020 without a protocol-layer exploit, and no competitor has accumulated as much of that evidence. What did change is the fee: since the UNIfication vote of 26 Dec 2025 the protocol takes a share of each pool fee for a UNI burn, paid out of what liquidity providers used to keep rather than added to the swap price. Gas costs on Ethereum mainnet remain the real barrier: below a few hundred dollars a trade, the network fee decides the outcome and no amount of pool efficiency rescues it.
Its core contracts are immutable, non-custodial and audited multiple times, with no exploit of the v2, v3 or v4 pools since 2020 — the strongest custody evidence in this category. The one drained pool on record was in v1, in April 2020. The risk that remains is entirely yours: nobody can reverse a transaction you signed, and no support desk exists.
The pool fee tier is set on-chain, and since Dec 2025 part of it goes to the protocol — out of the LP share, so the swapper pays the same. The cost that matters is Ethereum gas. For small trades the network fee dominates everything else, which is why deployments on cheaper chains and the aggregators in our DEX table matter more to small users than pool efficiency does.
Curve, on size. It is purpose-built for assets that trade near parity and its performance score rests on exactly that. Uniswap is the better general-purpose venue and scores higher on custody, reflecting Curve’s 2023 Vyper exploit.
