Bitcoin Surges Toward $85,000 as SEC Prepares to Open Tokenized Stock Pilot

Bitcoin pushed to its highest level in weeks after a short squeeze wiped out $648 million in bearish bets, while the SEC's tokenized stock pilot is set to open on September 22. Here is what both developments mean for U.S. investors.

Bitcoin Surges Toward $85,000 as SEC Prepares to Open Tokenized Stock Pilot

Bitcoin Breaks Out of Its September Range

Bitcoin climbed to roughly $84,984 on Monday morning, a gain of about 5.4% over 24 hours. The move carried the price well above the $82,284 high set on September 4, which had capped the market for most of the month.

Forced buying did much of the work. Roughly $746 million in leveraged positions were liquidated in 24 hours, and $647.9 million of that came from short sellers. Another $159.9 million was wiped out in a single hour, almost entirely on the short side. Bitcoin shorts made up $277.5 million of the total and ether shorts $122.8 million, according to Coinglass data.

Leverage Is Rebuilding, Not Retreating

The most notable detail is that traders did not step back after the squeeze. Futures open interest rose 7.59% to $156 billion, and 24-hour volume jumped 39% to $224 billion. That suggests new positions are replacing the liquidated ones, so the rally is drawing fresh leveraged demand.

The advance was broad. 95 of the 100 assets in the CoinDesk 100 index finished higher, and the index gained about 3%. The rally came despite last week's Federal Reserve rate hike, which lifted the benchmark target to 4.00%. Oil held near $102 a barrel and gold traded around $4,350, so the macro backdrop looked steadier rather than clearly supportive.

SEC Opens the Door to Tokenized Stocks

The second story could matter more over the long run. On September 22, the SEC's conditional five-year innovation exemption takes effect, allowing selected institutional venues to begin pilot trading of tokenized U.S. stocks on public blockchains through automated market makers.

The rules are strict. Tokens must preserve shareholder rights such as dividends and voting, venues face caps on trading volume and on the number of stocks they can list, and issuers have the right to object before third-party tokenized versions of their shares trade.

Who Stands to Benefit

Analysts at Goldman Sachs and Citizens see Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle as possible early winners. Coinbase already offers tokenized equities with many of the required features, plus custody and tokenization infrastructure. Robinhood's offshore stock tokens are derivative products that do not meet the exemption's ownership standards, so it would need a compliant U.S. version. Circle could gain indirectly if its USDC stablecoin becomes a settlement and collateral asset for on-chain markets.

Analysts do not expect Nasdaq or the NYSE's parent company to lose meaningful volume for now, given the trading caps and the limits of automated market makers in deep markets.

What to Watch This Week

Traders will be watching whether Bitcoin can hold above $82,000 and clear $85,000 with real spot demand, not just liquidations. On the calendar, U.S. jobless claims are due Thursday, and durable goods orders and consumer sentiment follow on Friday. Regulatory attention stays on how the SEC pilot performs in its first days.
