Changelly

Changelly is one of the oldest instant exchangers, running since 2015. You swap one coin for another without opening an account: choose the pair, give a payout address, send the deposit, and Changelly routes the trade through its liquidity partners and sends the result to your wallet. It also resells card purchases from fiat on-ramp partners and runs Changelly PRO, a separate order-book exchange.

Konstantin Gladych is credited as co-founder. The company has used several entities over the years; profiles list Fintechvision Ltd in Hong Kong and CGL Pro Technologies Limited in Seychelles. The current terms of use say the service is "operated and maintained by Marella LLC and its affiliates", with a St Vincent and the Grenadines address. That entity is the problem discussed below.

A lot of Changelly's volume never touches changelly.com. Wallets and hardware-wallet apps embed its API for in-app swaps; in 2025 Zengo and Cypherock both announced Changelly-powered swap features.

It is not a scam in the usual sense: it has processed swaps for over a decade and we found no report of a hack that took user funds. The questions are about who you are dealing with and what happens when a swap gets stuck.

In plain terms: the company named in Changelly's own terms no longer legally exists where it says it is based, and no EU, UK or US regulator licenses the service. The terms themselves bar users in the US, the UK, Germany and Austria, among others.

The privacy directory kycnot.me flags Changelly with a "potential risk" attribute, meaning it sees abnormal operation or exit-scam patterns. We have not seen evidence of an exit scam; the flag reflects frozen-funds reports. Treat it as a reason to keep amounts small.

No ID is needed to start a swap. Every deposit passes automated AML screening, and a flag triggers what Changelly calls a Customer Identification Procedure: the swap is frozen until you upload ID, a selfie and proof of source of funds through SumSub. Without verification, the transaction is not completed or refunded.

This is where most complaints come from. Reported cases include $131,000 held in January 2025, a $150,000 TRX swap and a $500,000 hold lasting more than ten months. The pattern is consistent: funds arrive, then the review starts. Small swaps rarely trigger it.

The 0.25% floating fee is low on paper, but it is applied to a rate Changelly quotes, not to the mid-market price. Compare the final amount you will receive, not the fee line. The fixed rate costs more up front and cannot drift, which is usually the better deal when a chain is congested.

Changelly's terms bar use by residents, nationals or people located in: Afghanistan, Austria, Bangladesh, Crimea, Cuba, the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, North Korea, Syria, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States (including territories), Venezuela and Yemen.

The list is unusual for including Germany, Austria and the UK. Using a VPN to get around it breaks the terms and gives Changelly grounds to hold funds if a swap is reviewed.
